This week’s issue of Josei Jishin reports signs of romance between actor Eita (26) and actress Mami Yamasaki (23). According to the magazine, the two were out on a date earlier this month.

Eita and Mami were seen sharing a meal at a yakiniku restaurant near Eita’s apartment. Josei Jishin’s reporter later managed to capture shots of the pair walking hand in hand on the street, and the two reportedly disappeared into Eita’s apartment after that.

Both of their agencies have responded by saying that they are simply good friends.

Eita has been one of the more successful young actors lately, landing major roles in both television and film. Yamasaki, on the other hand, started out as a gravure idol after winning the reader’s award in the 2004 Miss Magazine contest, but she has steadily been taking on more acting roles in recent years.

Nice looking and sweet girl (see video below), not too famous as yet but that could actually be a plus. Eita will still go a long way.

SMAP’s Kusanagi arrested for indecency

SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (34) has been arrested for public indecency after causing a disturbance and running around naked in Hinokicho Park near Tokyo Midtown late on Wednesday night.

At around 3:00am on April 23, residents in that area notified police that a naked man was making a lot of noise in the park. Officers arrived to find a drunken Kusanagi, and after he refused to heed their warnings, they arrested him on the spot for public indecency. Kusanagi is said to have openly defied the officers, answering them with “What’s wrong with me being naked?” According to police, a breath analysis test taken 5 hours after Kusanagi’s arrest detected a BrAC of 0.8 mg/L, well over the legal limit.

Kusanagi has been part of the super-popular group SMAP since 1988. As he is one of the industry’s biggest stars, the incident is likely to have a big impact. He is already being pulled from several advertisements, including commercials promoting Japan’s transition to all-digital broadcasts by 2011.

One of the most recent reports says that he has lost his somewhat regular role on NHK’s “PythagoraSwitch.” Fuji TV will likely have the toughest decision to make, as Kusanagi is a regular on four of the network’s popular shows.

Kusanagi also has a starring role with Yui Aragaki in the movie “Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta” (directed by Takashi Yamazaki). Filming has already wrapped up and the picture was scheduled for a September 5 release, putting distributor Toho in a difficult spot. TV Asahi is also considering their options, as it had planned to run some TV specials about the film on weekends from April 25 to May 18.

Interesting turn of events for Kusanagi san. I know alcohol can get you in trouble but where was his friends or posse at that time? This will affect him professionally for sure as he does have a typically clean image. I have always liked his acting (although it is not top notch) but it is sincere. Hope he comes out of this well. Pressure at the top sometimes do get to you… Ganbate.

Review

Plot/Story

It hits the viewer in the beginning that it is a “chick” flick with mainly female leads and casts ranging from actresses from their 20s to 50s. An interesting plot in the first episode, where a supposedly main character goes missing after her wedding night bash with her “girlfriends”, not so close ones at that. A definite hook to keep the viewers peeled for the reason for her disappearance.

As the story unfolds, the other 4 “girlfriend” characters are “brought” either by choice or by life’s many issues to find the truth and as such became closer as confidantes and eventually close friends.

Although the plot and direction is above average, the ending could be a lot stronger. The ending is where the drama fails in my opinion. It just does not wow the viewer to a point of exclamation “what a writing genius!”

Casting

The casting is done fairly well. Suzuki Kyoka is technically the lead and she did a great job of playing her uptight housewife role, she looks excellent at 40 btw. Hasegawa Kyoko is a pleasure to watch, she always brings her A class to the table. Fukiishi Kazue the youngest of the lot, looks great on camera but has a forgetable face and performance, could be a break out role for her although not likely in the short term.

The character who shined out of the whole cast lot is of course Momoi Kaori san, a very poised and experienced actress. A completely different league of her own, extremely impressed with her performance.

What does J think?

An averagely attractive cast when combined do a great job, however the issue with the drama is not the casting but the over plot construction and ending. If you are fans of housewifey family dramas with a twist, this may appeal to you but do be warmed about the lack of climatic ending.

Overall a good job by the main writer (Inoue Yumiko) who has penned <Gift>, <First Kiss> and <Engine> amongst others. I believe this is not her best work in the last couple of years, ganbate ne.

Review

Will review after watching it in full. Looks like a well written powerful heartlander touching drama (a signature of screenwriter Kuramoto san) that resonates well with Japanese all over Japan. A 5oth Year Anniversary drama from Fuji TV. This drama is Ken Ogata’s last performance before he succumbed to liver cancer and passed away in Oct 2008.

Always loved your performances since Black Jack in 2003 and your movies before and after that. Rest in Peace – Ogata san.

After 1 Episode

This drama comes across as a pretty serious family drama. Although the premise of an irresponsible father figure catching an incurable disease and repents and finally pass away in the last episode with a bitter sweet ending etc is a premise most people will roll their eyes at but this particular drama is slightly above average is terms of how it is setup and how good the actors are at their roles. The drama is pretty much targeted at the heartlanders/rural/suburbia Japanese and it did get a good response from those areas. Do look out for Kamiki Ryunosuke and his wonderful performance…Meisa looks great…

Review

Plot/Story

Tantalizing opening with a good hook in Ep 1. A surgeon Moriyama Kohei who encounters a career setback and relegated himself to a small town doing something completely different. The story follows the rebounding of a surgeon in a small town, his encounters with various characters for e.g. Tanaka Aiko a nurse in a local hospital in the process of revitalizing a struggling hospital, the complicated small town city politics surrounding economic wealth versus community service.

A pretty common concept but held well with the character dramas and side plots laced together with the main plot which reveals the biggest coincidence of all.

A pretty good hook in the beginning, with strong dialogue and believable emergency scenes and human medical dramas subsodes. However, the ending can be much stronger.

Casting

The casting is done well. Takenouchi Yutaka was a little stiff  in the beginning episodes but gradually dove right into his role. Kanno Miho as always is a pleasure to watch with her angsy character and her great “on the spot” crying scenes.

The character who shined and caught my eye is Ogawa Tamaki, a very poised actress who has been acting since 93, with her last work in 2006. An actress to keep an eye on definitely, she should see more roles unless she doesn’t want to take them.

What does J think?

An attractive cast who did a good job. If you are fans of Takenouchi Yutaka this drama gives you a good example of his dramatic acting especially towards the later episodes. Story is captivating and makes you stay hooked to it, however the ending is predictable with a rather flat climax.

<Tomorrow> will appeal to viewers who like a good energetic medical drama coupled with human relationships and small town politics. There are quite a number of tear jerking scenes, do prepare tissues.

Overall a good job by the main writer (Shinozaki Eriko) who has penned <Kurosagi> and <Daisuki> amongst others.
